The Opportunity
Tower Hill School is seeking a dynamic and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide financial expertise, operational leadership, and a forward-thinking approach to the overall administration of the school. The CFO will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the school by ensuring that the financial infrastructure and resources are in place to support and sustain the high-quality educational experience that Tower Hill is known for. This role requires a leader who can align financial and operational strategies with the school’s core values and mission.
The CFO works directly with the Head of School, the Business Office team, and the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees to ensure financial and operational objectives are achieved. With the mandate to create the conditions for a successful learning environment and a resilient community, the CFO builds strong relationships, anticipates needs, and drives data-informed decision-making across the organization.
Engaging across all of the School's essential activities, this person directly manages a team of people who execute the accounting and finance functions. The CFO retains responsibility for legal affairs, compliance, and risk management. As part of an intentional transition from the incumbent to a new CFO, the person in this role will manage a network of vendor relationships executing on key functions including financial investments, certain bookkeeping functions, payables processing, billing, and other coordinated outsourced functions.
In support of the governance and fiduciary responsibilities of the Tower Hill Board of Trustees, the CFO provides timely and accurate analysis and reporting as well as financial forecasts. This person serves as a staff liaison to three highly engaged board committees. The CFO works directly with the Head of School and Director of Finance to craft and execute the school’s operating budget and strategic financial planning. The CFO provides the Head of School direct leadership and support in envisioning and executing on the organizational structure, administrative tools and systems, and business decision-making.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will take a comprehensive and collaborative approach to the work, building relationships and implementing best practices in the systems that support efficient school operations. This position requires superb management and organizational skills. Essential Responsibilities Include:
Fiscal Management and Accounting
- Manage the school's financial resources in partnership with the Head of School.
- Supervise Business Office personnel and oversee the full spectrum of accounting functions, ensuring smooth, accurate, and efficient operations.
- In collaboration with the Director of Finance, lead the development, refinement, and implementation of the annual operating budget, gathering input from all relevant stakeholders.
- Prepare long-term financial forecasts and projections, including maintaining the school’s financial model to provide actionable financial insights to the Head of School and Board of Trustees in evaluating and supporting strategic initiatives.
- Coordinate with the Director of Advancement and Director of Enrollment Management to establish and regularly assess fundraising and enrollment revenue goals.
- Ensure the preparation of accurate and timely financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, for internal and external stakeholders.
- Serve as the staff liaison to the school’s investment fund manager, and the finance, investment, and audit board committees.
- Ensure that the school's business and financial policies position the school to mitigate and reduce enterprise risk.
- Oversee cash, investments, loans, credit facilities, and asset management, with direct treasury management responsibility.
- Maintain proper cash reserves, managing endowment funds and operational cash flow in line with established financial expectations.
- Establish a regular process for review, update, and consistent application of appropriate internal controls, policies, and financial procedures.
- In close collaboration with the Director of Security and Operations, coordinate the planning, execution, and financing of major construction projects.
- Develop and execute financial contingency plans for various crisis scenarios to ensure business continuity.
- Oversee the annual financial audit and 403(b) audit processes, ensuring full compliance with applicable regulations.
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of all required financial reports and compliance filings, including the annual Form 990 and 5500.
Personnel Management
- In coordination with outside counsel, the Assistant Head of School, and the Director of Human Resources, ensure that the school's personnel policies support its programs and that the school's actions regarding hiring, compensation, training, promotion, and separation conform with state and federal requirements, and are in line with the school's strategic goals.
- In close collaboration with the Director of Human Resources, ensure that the retirement plans, health and disability insurance,and other benefit programs are brokered, designed, and funded in alignment with the school’s financial priorities.
- Develop policies to ensure that Human Resources information is secured and limited to the appropriate stakeholders.
- Provide appropriate and timely information to the Head of School for salary comparisons, both internal and external, including the coordination of the preparation of employment contracts.
Risk Management, Physical Plant & Operations
- Oversee all campus and work safety issues, regulatory and environmental compliance, and any legal matters in consultation with the Head of School.
- Lead initiatives to ensure financial data security and implement robust protections and protocols for protecting sensitive information handled by the business office and vendors.
- In collaboration with the Director of Security and Operations, ensure the resources and coordinated planning are in place to undertake facilities maintenance and special projects, including major infrastructure investments.
- Serve as a resource to help the Director of Security and Operations mitigate liability exposure through policies, procedures, training, audits, investigations, and engineered solutions.
- Maintain the school's insurance coverage, liability, and risk-related policies and controls. Work with insurance advisors and brokers to ensure adequate, appropriate, and cost-effective insurance is in place.
- Partner with the food services vendor leadership to enable the required staffing, procurement process, catering and event support, and vendor solutions are in place to sustain a positive overall dining experience, including oversight of menu planning.
- Serve as liaison with the school attorneys and local municipal government offices and services.
- Keep informed about emerging financial risks and regulatory changes affecting the educational sector.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be an experienced executive and a team player who possesses:
- Education and experience equivalent to a master's degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related field.
- Experience in or knowledge of independent schools is beneficial.
- At least five years of experience as a Chief Financial Officer or Business Officer, with significant managerial experience is strongly preferred.
- Advanced Excel and analysis skills, prior experience working across technology platforms, and a strong working knowledge of business accounting policies, procedures, practices, and financial software programs preferred.
- Demonstrated effectiveness working with trustees, employees, and external constituents, including the negotiation of contracts and management of vendors, suppliers, and project managers.
- Experience working with external auditors, implementing internal controls, and managing compliance-related issues.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and execute all duties through an accessible and collaborative approach that supports the comprehensive needs of the school’s leadership, governance, employees, and stakeholders.
The salary range for this role starts at $220,000 and is dependent upon relevant experience. The School’s comprehensive benefits include health, dental, and vision services coverage, as well as a 403(b) retirement matching program, paid time off, and eligibility for generous tuition remission that applies to employee dependents enrolled at the school.

Teaching Openings
Tower Hill School seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Math Department Chair to lead and oversee the development and implementation of the Math Department’s curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments in grades 5 - 12. The Math Department Chair also provides influence in curriculum decisions K-4, and acts as a leader in the wider school community by helping to advance strategic priorities as set by the school and in collaboration with other department chairs. Department Leadership Responsibilities:
- Conduct observations and evaluations of teachers, with particular emphasis on those who need more attention or who are due for a more in-depth review, including new teachers
- Ensure the proper flow of content and skills within the department
- Serve as an instructional leader within the department by staying current of best practices, while modeling and encouraging their use.

The Associate Director of Athletics reports to the Director of Athletics, and assists in all aspects of the department including scheduling, supervision of the athletic facilities, event management, and transportation. This position plays a critical role in maintaining student-athlete subscription in the program, and inspiring a positive athletic culture throughout the entire school.
Primary duties and responsibilities include:
- Managing game day operations and traveling to away games
- Working with the Communications Department to ensure content on athletics-related pages of the website, league websites, media websites, and social media is current
- Liaising with coaches, Green and White Club, team captains, and parents to plan special events

We are seeking a Director of Facilities to oversee all aspects of Tower Hill’s physical plant, grounds, and infrastructure starting in July 2025. Reporting to the senior administrator in charge of operations, the Director of Facilities is responsible for ensuring a safe, functional, and well-maintained environment conducive to teaching, learning, and community engagement. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, planning, and management for facilities operations, maintenance, construction, renovation, and sustainability initiatives. This position leads a dedicated team of employees responsible for the oversight and daily management of the campus, which comprises 44 acres of grounds, historic and recently renovated buildings, and athletic facilities.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive facilities management plan aligned with the school’s mission, values, and operational needs, and in compliance with regulatory requirements, codes, and standards.
- Lead and supervise the facilities team, including maintenance staff, custodians, groundskeepers,, and contracted service providers, ensuring effective coordination, communication, and teamwork.
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of buildings, systems, equipment, and grounds, prioritizing safety, functionality, and cost-effectiveness, and implementing preventive maintenance programs to prolong asset lifespan.

We are looking for a professional, caring individual with the ability to engage students in learning and to teach all aspects of literacy; reading / writing / spelling / speaking (including phonetics, phonology, morphology, orthography, semantics, syntax and text structure) throughout our six week summer enrichment program. Essential Job Functions:
The Reading Specialist will work as part of the leadership team with the Executive Director to accomplish the literacy/academic enrichment, assessment, and staff literacy instruction development goals of the program. The Reading Specialist will work closely with our educators to coordinate all literacy aspects of assessment with curriculum, identify tutoring needs, and keep all stakeholders informed of relevant implementations, issues, and results. They will also identify readers for tiered supports, and they will implement daily small group tutoring sessions with these students.
Specifically, the Reading Specialist will:
- Coordinate all aspects of all standardized assessments in terms of the pre/post and any ongoing assessments including logistics and data sharing across the organization
- Plan and coordinate the sharing of assessment results with all relevant staff members
- Assist with any staff or volunteer development for accomplishing academic growth for each student
- When appropriate, prepare a report on individual students to be shared with the partner school staff.
- Assist with staff training in an individual and group capacity.
- Emphasize the importance of good oral language models for all students, and daily practice in developing higher levels of oral language for all classrooms, including art, music and other sciences.
- Support teacher differentiation of literacy instruction based on student needs.
- Coordinate literacy resources and access to Horizons leveled library and guided reading books.
- Meet regularly with Administration as needed to accomplish goals and/orproblem-solve as issues occur.
Qualifications:

Horizons at Tower Hill School is seeking dedicated and effective assistant 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade teachers with a dynamic talent for creating and nurturing a lifelong joy of learning in children. We are looking for a talented, passionate, caring professional who will work as a team player, fulfill the Horizons mission, and create a joyous, inclusive, inspiring and educational culture.
Horizons at Tower Hill School provides a six-week, full day educational enrichment summer session designed to encourage and support students from Tower Hill’s surrounding communities that have been impacted by educational inequity. We are committed to the development of the whole child through experiences that build problem solving skills, foster awareness of community responsibility, instill respect for others, and encourage a life-long interest in learning. Horizons blends high-quality academics with arts, athletics, enrichment, and confidence-building activities, including a special focus on the important life skill of swimming.
Our team consists of three lead teachers, three assistant teachers, program staff and volunteers, and a Reading Specialist, and will be supported by the Executive Director. During the summer of 2025, Horizons at Tower Hill will welcome back two 15-person classes of rising 2nd and 3rd graders and will welcome one new class of 15 rising 1st graders. Teachers are able to design a project-based curriculum and integrate learning strategies that address the individual needs of the students. It is our hope that Horizons summer staff members will return to the program for more than one summer as we continue to work together, support our students, and build the program and the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach high quality, culturally competent, project-based curriculum and engage students in learning math, science and language arts throughout our six week summer enrichment program.
- Plan and lead fun, community-building games and enriching experiential learning opportunities, and accompany students to swimming lessons and field trips.
- Participate in daily meals with the students, attend Family Night and Faculty Meetings, and other duties that may be required.
- Develop and nurture a safe, respectful, challenging and fun learning environment.
- Assist in evaluating program effectiveness.
- As needed and appropriate, aid in accessing and attracting useful resources of community institutions, the school system, public agencies, and local businesses for the benefit of the Horizons programs.
- Help maintain ongoing communication with parents, caregivers and school year teachers.
- Participate in the planning and delivery of half-day learning activities for students and families on Saturdays throughout the school year (one per quarter).
- In collaboration with the Executive Director, provide ongoing input into this job description as the position unfolds to keep this job description as accurate as possible.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
In addition to a strong commitment to Horizon’s mission, this position requires a balance of knowledge of best practices and practical experience with and proficiency in the skills of instruction. The ideal candidate for the Lead Teacher position must be flexible, well organized, capable of taking initiative, and full of enthusiasm for both teaching and learning.
- One or more years of teaching experience, with a gift for both building on students' love of learning and bolstering their basic academic skills.
- Proven ability to relate well to diverse children and families, to plan and deliver engaging, challenging lessons for school-age children.
- Knowledge and skill in classroom management, social emotional learning and specific strategies for developing children’s noncognitive skills such as focus, determination, empathy and self discipline.
- Ability to maintain good communication between all parties, to have clear expectations and directions, and to provide feedback to the ED, to staff, and to Horizons National as the curriculum and the program unfolds.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
- Leadership experience and ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field; or equivalent
- Complete all state and federal clearances and be CPR/AED certified

- Three Staff Orientation Dates in April, May, and June- Dates TBA
- June 18 and June 20: Classroom Set-up Days
- June 23-August 1: Program Instruction Days (Mon-Fri, except July 3 and July 4)
The program meets daily from 7:45 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The Assistant Teacher is expected to honor the full time, six-week commitment and three Saturdays throughout the school year. Salary starts at $5,000 and varies depending on experience.

Coaching Opportunities
Tower Hill School is looking to create a pool of qualified candidates to fill future coaching opportunities beginning with the 2023-2024 academic year.
The athletics program at Tower Hill competes in the Delaware Independent Schools Conference and Delaware Interscholastic Athletics Association, offering 15 sports at the middle school level (grades 7-8) and 19 sports at the upper school level (grades 9-12). Tower Hill believes that the physical well being of our students is as important as their intellectual development and that many important lessons are taught through an athletic experience. Therefore, athletics are a fundamental part of the total curriculum at Tower Hill and are an integral part of the school day. Students in grades 7-10 are expected to participate in interscholastic athletics during each season while students in grades 11-12 are expected to participate in interscholastic athletics during two of the three seasons.
The objectives of teachers and coaches at Tower Hill are identical: to help young people reach their fullest potential intellectually, emotionally, and physically. Coaches are teachers who deal with physical fitness as well as the fundamentals and strategies of sport. We must offer our student athletes, who vary in their interest and ability, quality programs that appropriately challenge them to stretch their outer limits of endurance, self-discipline, loyalty, self-confidence, leadership, cooperation, and winning and losing graciously. Coaches are expected to uphold high standards and teach the valuable lessons that can be learned from athletic competition.
